Operations
Operator vs. Investor: Why I Choose Both
October 15, 2026 · Sthaaz
Most investors price risk. Operators understand it. That gap — between a spreadsheet’s view of a business and the lived reality of running one — is why I refuse to pick a side.
Operating keeps investing honest. When I sit across the table from a founder, I’m running the same math they are: payroll in six weeks, the customer who hasn’t signed, the hire that will make or break the quarter. That instinct comes from having written the code, closed the first deal, and made payroll personally. You can’t unlearn what making payroll teaches you. It changes what you believe and what you discount.
Investing keeps operating sharp. Running companies full-time teaches you depth — one sector, one battlefield. Deploying capital forces portfolio thinking: which thesis deserves the next dollar, which team is outperforming its market, where the pattern repeats. ILA Venture exists partly for that reason. It’s a lens on the region that a single company can never provide.
The two roles feed each other. A founder asking for growth capital gets questions from me that only an operator would ask — unit economics under wage inflation, what happens to retention when the competitor raises, whether the second market is a real answer or an escape hatch. And when I do deploy, I deploy into ventures I’d be willing to run myself. That’s the filter. Not “could this return 10x” but “would I bet my own hours on it.”
That standard is expensive. It means saying no to most of what’s pitched, and it means some cheques never happen because the conviction isn’t there. I’m fine with that. Capital follows conviction, not the other way around.
A holding structure is how both roles coexist. The operating entities generate cash and ground truth. The capital arm deploys into what the operators see first. Neither is a hobby for the other — they’re one system, and each keeps the other from the failure modes it can’t see on its own.
Operate like an investor. Invest like an operator. The compounding is in the combination.
